ESCI Level 2About
My triathlon journey began with Swim-Run-Swim competitions in the scenic city of San Diego and reached a pivotal milestone with my participation in the Ironman World Championship in Oahu in 1980. From 1980 to 1985, I had the privilege of competing as a professional triathlete on the global stage, where I honed my skills, expanded my expertise, and deepened my passion for the sport. Following my professional athletic career, I transitioned into a distinguished career in education, serving in roles such as physical educator, science teacher, assistant principal, principal, and ultimately Superintendent of Schools from 1985 to 2016. These experiences cultivated my leadership capabilities and strengthened my commitment to mentoring and fostering growth in others. In 2016, I joined TriDot as a part-time coach, where I shared my passion for triathlon with athletes of all levels. By 2022, I transitioned to a full-time role as TriDot’s Head of Coach Development. In this capacity, I am dedicated to empowering athletes and coaches alike, fostering excellence, and advancing the sport by nurturing individual potential and inspiring the next generation of leaders in triathlon.
Philosophy
My coaching philosophy is grounded in an athlete-centered approach that prioritizes trust, collaboration, and personalized guidance. As a dedicated coach and mentor, I aim to empower each athlete to recognize their potential and achieve extraordinary results. Throughout my coaching career, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse group of athletes, all united by their passion for the sport and the lifestyle it represents. A cornerstone of my coaching methodology is a strong emphasis on Emotional Intelligence. I believe that optimizing the mental dimension of training and racing is as vital as physical preparation. By fostering qualities such as grit, passion, and perseverance, I help athletes unlock their full potential and achieve success, not just in sport but in all aspects of life. Moments when athletes return to share their gratitude—acknowledging the support and mentorship that guided them through challenges—are among the most fulfilling aspects of my work. Together, my athletes and I embark on a transformative journey that extends beyond enhancing performance. We focus on cultivating resilience, character, and a mindset that equips them for success both on and off the racecourse.
