I’m Matt, and I'm the brains, passion and experience behind Motivate Triathon Coaching. I’m a British Triathlon L2 Qualified Coach, Ironman U Certified Coach and YMCAfit qualified personal trainer. More importantly though, I’ve been competing in and coaching triathlon and endurance sports for around 15 years, more than 10 of those as a coach. I started at the back of the pack (second-to-last riding a mountain bike in my first sprint triathlon) and, over the years, I progressed to taking podiums, securing World Championship qualification slots, and tackling Xterras and Ultramans, thanks to consistent hard work and smart training. I did much of this while having a successful corporate career and a large family, raising three kids. All of which is to say, “I’ve been there.” This level of understanding and empathy, allied with a commitment to the latest training know-how and techniques, is what makes me the ideal coaching fit for busy age-group athletes especially. I’ll be your biggest fan, your sounding board but also your critic and motivator-in-chief when needed, to help you deliver on your untapped athletic potential. I’ll also be your partner in developing your athletic IQ and fueling your continued passion for triathlon and endurance racing.
Philosophy
My coaching philosophy is built around four pillars: 1. Consistency is the magic ingredient when it comes to triathlon performance, so my number one priority is helping athletes to find a way to train consistently in a way that fits within their wider life and commitments. 2. By training smart, even the busiest and most time-crunched athletes can achieve amazing things. 3. Technology can be a game-changer when used correctly. But it’s also essential that athletes get to know and understand their own body, performance and motivations. 4. A coach is responsible for athletes enjoying their journey as well as their destination. Sometimes a coffee ride with the local club does more for the soul than any set of intervals ever could.
Credentials
Ironman U Certified Coach, British Triathlon L2 Coach, YMCAfit Personal Trainer
Accomplishments
Over the past decade or so, I've coached more than a hundred athletes to fulfil their dreams. While coaching several age-group athletes to Ironman or 70.3 World Championships is definitely an accomplishment I'm proud of, I'm equally proud of having coached a couple of 60-something-year-olds who had no previous experience to competing their first Olympic-distance triathlons and coaching a 45-year-old high-flying exec to complete Ironman Nice on just 6 hours of training per week.
Experience
Over roughly 12 years of coaching at multiple levels, I've acquired more than 1,000 hours of online coaching as well as 100s of hours of in-person coaching of individuals or groups. I also regularly provide webinars to groups of athletes and professionals on a range of triathlon-related topics.
